You don't need to install any special software to play the game. It will play perfectly fine on computers which you do not have admisitrative rights on. The best part of the game for the office? The "BOSS" key. If your boss sneaks up on you while playing the game, you only need to quickly press ctrl+F, and the game instantly hides itself and a generic "productivity spreadsheet" is displayed instead. You can even copy and paste actual work you are doing into this spreadsheet, so you can actually be working on something legitimate when this screen appears! When your boss leaves, ctrl+F again will instantly return you to the exact point where you left the game!
The game elements are hidden behind enough VBA code with this trick that, unless your boss is a serious programmer (and even then doubtful he would try), there is no way anyone would realize that a video game lies hidden behind your "productive work." Excellent Quest (XQ) works on all versions of MS Excel 2003 and up. There are two seperate versions of the game: one for Excel 2003 (which has fewer colors therefore the graphics and resolution are slightly compromised), and one for Excel 2007 (which is what the game was originally designed using). Obviously if you have the choice, go with the 2007 version.
The game plays like any classical style Role Playing Game (RPG). You are an unknown knight who wanders around on a large world map. Randomly, you will be attacked by various monsters on the world map, and you will then be taken to a battle screen and menu, which shows the backdrop of the region you are in, an image of the monster you have been attacked by, and the various menu commands available to you. The fighting engine is entirely turn based, but there are many unique elements which make the battle system intriguing.
Weapons and armor (as well as potions and items) can be purchased or found and then equipped via the inventory menu. Spells are learned throughout the game and offer varying levels of gameplay depth and strategy. Weapons can be strengthened via blacksmiths, and certain items may be combined later in the game to create stronger weapons and armors!
With a unique lock-picking routine, over 30 spells to learn, tons of weapons and armor to aquire, Excellent Quest has plenty to keep even the experienced RPG player busy for quite a while.
